«J'ai toujours été attiré par la photographie couleur, même quand elle n'était pas à la mode. Pendant longtemps, beaucoup n'ont juré que par le noir et blanc.» Saul Leiter Autodidacte, Leiter fait son éducation artistique en passant tous ses étés à la bibliothèque de l'université de Pittsburgh et en visitant les expositions du Museum of Modern Art à New York. Il se consacre d'abord à la peinture et c'est grâce au peintre expressionniste abstrait Richard Poussette-Dart qu'il commence à s'intéresser sérieusement à la photographie. En 1947, il découvre la «street photography» en visitant l'exposition d'Henri Cartier-Bresson au MoMA et se procure un Leica. Il photographie les rues de New York en noir et blanc et s'intéresse l'année suivante à la couleur. En 1953, Saul Leiter ouvre un studio photographique sur Bleecker Street et travaille pendant une trentaine d'années pour les magazines les plus prestigieux, tels Harper's Bazaar, Esquire, Elle et British Vogue. «I liked color even though many photographers looked down on color or felt it was superficial or shallow.
