Evropa za císaře Karla IV. (1316-1378) - Karel IV., syn lucemburského hraběte Jana, byl českým a římským králem a císařem Svaté říše římské. Se svými tituly zamýšlel naložit velkolepě. Dobu, v níž vládl, však poznamenala řada katastrof a jeho české království bylo zchudlé. Přál si, aby byl v Evropě mir a aby byla Evropa jednotná jako kdysi za Karla I. Velikého. Doufal, že se mu podaří znovu upevnit status císaře, oslabený konflikty mezi papeži. Úkol to byl těžký, ale měl velkou výhodu - svou rodinu. Jeho synovec Karel V. Moudrý byl králem ve Francii, jeho nevlastní bratr Václav I. Lucemburský vládl na západě říše v Lucembursku, Brabantsku a Limbursku a tři z jeho čtyř manželek pocházely z východních části říše. Europe under Emperor Charles IV of Luxembourg (1316-1378) - Charles IV was the son of John the Blind, Count of Luxembourg. He was King of Bohemia, King of the Romans and Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. He had a high opinion of himself. But the years of his reign were subject to catastrophic events and his kingdom, Bohemia, became improverished. Following in the footsteps of Charlemagne, he aimed at creating a Europe united in peace. He re-established the status of the Emperor whose authority had been weakened by conflicts with the popes. The task was a hard one but he possessed an important asset, his family:in France, King Charles V the Good was his nephew, to the west of the Empire, in Luxembourg and Brabant-Limburg, Wenceslas 1st, Duke of Luxembourg, was his half-brother. Three of his four wives came from the east of the empire. Despite its being at war with France, he managed to obtain an alliance with England. Finally, he was linked to the most brilliant pope of the times, Clement VI. by friendship. Did he succeed in his aims? What strategies did he employ? His century led Europe to the Renaissance.
