With the aim of winning the World Sports Car Championship, the racing series for commercially produced GT cars, Ferrari used its considerable resources and know-how to develop the 250GTO racing sports car, which was based on the chassis and engine of the 250GT SWB (GTO is the abbreviation for Gran Turismo Omologato, meaning that it complied with GT class racing regulations). Recognized as an automotive "work of art", Series 1 of the 250GTO was produced in 1962/1963 and significantly improved in 1964 with Series 2 to compete with the competition. This included the 330LM model, which was classified as a prototype because only 39 examples were produced, and was fitted with a 4-liter V12SOHC engine from the Ferrari 400 Super America (as opposed to the original 3-liter V12SOHC). The 250GTO was successful in a number of races, including the 1962 series championship, and its highlight was its domination of the podium at the 1962 24 Hours of Le Mans. In the GT class, where the major awards were determined, the No. 19 won the class and finished second overall, while the No. 22 finished second in class and third overall, with the 330LM taking the overall victory. The following year and the year after that, the Ferrari 250GTO won the World Sports Car Championship.
