Mudcloth originating from Mali, otherwise known as Bògòlanfini or bogolan, is a handmade Malian cotton fabric dyed with fermented mud. Handpicked cotton is cleaned and hand-spun into thread. Traditional hand-looms are used to weave strips of fabric which are then sewn together into larger pieces of fabric. The dying begins by soaking the fabric in a brew of leaves, bark and wood. Layers of clay-rich mud are applied with sticks and brushes; one mud-application and one dye-bath are required for each successive shade of colour.
The Mudcloth has become a symbol of Malian cultural identity. It’s now popular worldwide for use in Fashion, fine art and decoration. 100% cotton
