The Golden Age of Travel
In the early 1930s the mighty steam locomotives of the 241 A series appeared on France's rails. In the 'golden' days of travel before World War II they hauled heavy express trains between Paris and the Atlantic ports Cherbourg and Le Havre, as well as between Paris and Basel. There, the famous Arlberg-Orient-Express was also among their duties. After the war they operated mainly between Paris and Strasbourg and between Paris and Basel until 1965. The 241 A 1 has been preserved at the Mulhouse railway museum, and the 241 A 65 is the largest operable steam locomotive in Europe in Switzerland.
Prototype: Heavy express steam locomotive with Schlepptender Series 13 (241-A) of the French Eastern Railway (EST). Black base color scheme with black undercarriage. Built as a locomotive for the express wagon set "EDELWEISS". Type-specific modification of the wind deflectors, 2-light Spitzensignal with petroleum lamps, with one lamp on top and one lamp on the bottom, and more. Locomotive operating number EST 241-004. Operational status circa 1931.
