Description

KM1 111503 Track1 K. Bay. Sts B. BR 15 3201, S2/6 Ep. Id, Ludwigshafen violet brown FineScale DCC Sound

The prototype

Among railroad enthusiasts, the Bavarian S 2/6 is considered one of the most beautiful locomotives ever. The driving wheel diameter of 2200mm is just as elegant as the bar frame used for the first time ever in Germany, which provides an unobstructed view and thus conveys a sense of lightness in the running gear. The streamlined cladding of the dome, smokebox door, chimney and driver's cab underlined the designers' aspirations. The four-cylinder compound engine and the smoke tube superheater also represented the state of the art of the time. Maffei received the order for the S 2/6 in December 1905 and delivered the machine on May 3, 1906! It was first stationed in Munich. There it set the speed record of 154.5 km/h in 1907, which was only beaten 29 years later by the BR 05. Its status as a one-off made its operational use difficult, as other machines did not have the corresponding performance data for train rotations. The Bavarian S 2/6 was therefore transferred to the Pfalzbahn in 1910 and was used as an express locomotive between Ludwigshafen and Strasbourg. In 1922 it was transferred back to Munich and then came to Augsburg in 1923. After being decommissioned, it was preserved as a museum exhibit and is now on display at the Nuremberg Transport Museum.
