For decades, the transportation of the heaviest ore trains in Western Europe between the North Sea ports and the Peine-Salzgitter steel works as well as to the Saarland was one of the special achievements of the class 151. The trains reached loads of up to 5,700 tons. They were operated exclusively in double traction and with automatic couplers, as conventional screw couplers would not have been able to withstand the very high tractive forces.
