Description

H0 Märklin 46987 freight train baggage car Pwg Pr 14 compatible with E95 1:87

A Pwg with end plates
Pwg, or spelled out Packwagen for Güterzüge, was once a wagon type that populated the German rails in tens of thousands. For decades there were not only train conductors in passenger trains; they also served on freight trains. To spare the train conductor in freight yards from fighting their way through the ballast to the locomotive staff, Pwg were usually placed between locomotive and train. The most commonly built Pwg design was constructed by the Prussians as the Pwg pr14, which between 1913 and 1925 reached a total of 9,752 units. A feature common to most Pwg was the observation cupola, from which the train conductor could observe the train. When in the 1920s mass freight traffic on the rails with modern self unloading wagons was introduced, the Reichsbahn did not forgo Pwg, although coal in block trains especially went directly to power stations. However, on these heavy trains the freight train pack wagons were attached at the end for safety reasons, because the heavy steel self unloading wagons would probably have crushed the light Pwg in accidents. Times have passed. Today all freight trains run without Pwg. On the model railway this important chapter of railway history lives on in a variety of train compositions.
