Electric Locomotive Class 151

In the late 1960s, Deutsche Bundesbahn recognized that the standard locomotives of Classes 140 and 150 were insufficient to meet the increasing traffic demands. The former were too weak (BR 140), while the latter were too slow (BR 150). A new type of locomotive was needed. What the engineers then put on the tracks was, simply put, a "six-axle 140". However, the frame and bogies were based on Class 103. The new machine was classified as Class 151. With 170 units, it shaped the image of heavy freight trains. Initially, the locomotives wore the beautiful chrome oxide green livery before switching to the elegant ocean blue/beige. Eventually, they appeared after their orient red phase in bright traffic red and with single-arm pantographs instead of the original catenary collector. In this outfit, they were actively in service with DB Cargo until the end of their days in summer 2024. Model railroaders, on the other hand, can allow the 151 a significantly longer service life.

Prototype: Electric Locomotive Class 151 of Deutsche Bahn AG. Traffic red base color. Operating number 151 035-3. Operating condition since 2009.
