Description

H0 Märklin 38950 Electric locomotive, Class E 95, Club Insider locomotive 2 2024 MFX DCC digital sound
The E 95 – a milestone in German locomotive construction
Larger, stronger, more expensive: That is how you could characterize the electric locomotive class E 95, which was put into service in 1927 in six examples by the Deutsche Reichsbahn. With a continuous power output of over 3,200 hp, a length of over 20 meters, a weight of 138.5 tons, and a price of 543,000 Reichsmarks, these characteristic machines were at the time the most powerful and most expensive German electric locomotives. They were designed for the many coal trains weighing up to 2,200 tons that daily rolled from the Silesian uplands toward Dresden and Berlin. Their rugged, almost intimidating appearance rested, among other things, on the two tall forecabs, in which the oil-cooled main transformer and the switchgear were housed. In addition, the E 95 were essentially twin locomotives to accommodate the six drive axles required. In operation these powerhouses proved themselves superbly; they reached at the time the highest mileage of all Silesian freight locomotives. As coal demand declined during the Great Depression, the 70 km/h locomotives were also used for passenger trains. E 95 02 has remained preserved at the Halle P locomotive depot. Perhaps in the not-too-distant future you can even experience this former technical masterpiece live. It will certainly not haul coal trains anymore. That remains—on a small scale—the preserve of Märklin's new superb model.
Prototype: Heavy freight locomotive class E 95 of the Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft (DRG). For use in front of heavy coal trains on the Silesian network. Blue-grey base color. The electric locomotive was for a long time the largest electric locomotive in Germany. Locomotive number E 95 01. Operational status around 1928.
