When the Porsche 904 was first presented at Schloss Solitude in Stuttgart in 1963 to compete in the GT class of the sports car championship, it was initially planned to build the minimum required number of 100 vehicles mandated by the FIA for successful homologation. These were to be offered not only as racing vehicles but also with road approval to reach this production number.
This strikingly original 904 has enjoyed 48 years of careful maintenance and only sporadic use by its long-term owners.
According to the factory data card, 904-098 was manufactured with a 587/3 Carrera engine, painted in a light ivory color, and fitted with a blue interior with fabric seats. The car was delivered on Dunlop tires.
This 904-098 was originally purchased by J.L. Brundage and later sold to Ted Tidwell from Jacksonville. Tidwell embarked on a brief but successful racing career, achieving second place in the modified class E at the SCCA event in Bainbridge, Georgia, in September 1964. Around the same time, the car secured first place at the Chimney Rock Hillclimb, where it presumably set a new record. In 1965, 904-098 finished 9th overall and second in the 2-liter GT class at the USRRC event in Pensacola and by the end of the year, it was first in the production-based class A in Savannah Effingham.
904-098 was offered for sale in November 1965 and subsequently went to two dealers. One sold the original engine to a buyer in Ohio, and the other replaced it with a type 547/4 Carrera engine, originally from a 550 Spyder. Presumably, this dealer also painted the car in its current dark blue livery with a white racing stripe and number circles.
Bruce Herrington from Virginia became the new owner in November 1968 and received registration from the local authorities in Virginia in April 1969. Although he owned the car for almost 20 years, he drove it only rarely, using it just once at a PVA event at the Marlboro Raceway.
In 1989, 904-098 came into the hands of Werner Schoch and Heinz Heinrichs, both 904 experts. Coincidentally, a Porsche collector from Denmark was searching for an original 904, and through a third party, the car was then facilitated to them.
In 1992, the Danish owner acquired the original 4-cam engine, engine No. 99090, which had come into the possession of former racing driver Warren Eads and was modified by his mechanic, the renowned Carrera expert and former driver Al Cadrobi.
