Vitamin D: responsible for bone function

Everyone is talking about vitamin D, as its deficiency is thought to be the cause of many diseases and a generally impaired immune system. The fat-soluble vitamin is often referred to as the bone vitamin: It influences the absorption of calcium and phosphorus in the intestine and is therefore responsible for hard bones and healthy teeth, as well as strong muscles.

Sunshine vitamin for a sunny disposition
More than almost any other micronutrient, vitamin D3 is responsible for a generally strong immune system, brain performance and a good mood. As it regulates the brain messenger serotonin - commonly known as the feel-good or happiness hormone - it indirectly influences your mood. However, vitamin D owes its special position among the vitamins to another property: like no other vitamin, it can be generated completely independently by the body - thanks to UV-B radiation.

Vitamin D deficiency
Many people (but also pets) nowadays show symptoms of vitamin D deficiency. First and foremost, such an undersupply can cause rickets in children and osteoporosis or bone softening in adults. Hyperfunction of the parathyroid gland is also one of the symptoms of vitamin D3 deficiency. However, as this exceptional micronutrient also plays a special role in protecting against pathogens, more and more studies are looking at the influence of vitamin D3 on the risk of cancer and a stable cardiovascular system.

D3 deficiency: who is affected?
Vitamin D deficiency is more common in the months when there is little sunshine than in summer - that is in the nature of things. However, many more people need the external vitamin kick than just those who are sun-deprived. People with a weakened immune system and people with little daily energy can benefit from the liquid food supplement. People who spend most of their time indoors, couch potatoes, office workers and people who only go outside wearing a veil or with a high sun protection factor should also take a D3 drop. Vitamin D deficiency often also affects the elderly, whose skin is less able to produce vitamin D, as well as people in convalescence and after surgery. Vegans who do not eat foods containing vitamin D due to their diet can also be affected by the deficiency.

Vit. D - when is it too little?
The extent of the vitamin D deficiency in Germany and Europe is assessed differently - depending on which standard is used for the serum concentration in the blood. Many experts specify the limit value of 20 nanograms per milliliter (ng/ml) of D3, which is not reached by a good half of adults in Germany. Some other experts even recommend a calcidiol level - i.e. a level of 25(OH)2-cholecalciferol in the blood - of at least 40 nanograms per milliliter. Well-supplied people have a level of 40-80 nanograms per milliliter. If the value is lower than 20 ng/ml, doctors speak of a deficiency.

Vitamin D3 from food
In addition to sun exposure on the skin, vitamin D can be obtained from food, but only to a very limited extent. With 330 micrograms (μg) of vitamin D, cod liver oil has by far the highest value. Smoked eel contains 90 µg/mg. Other fatty fish such as herring, sprat, salmon or trout contain considerably less vitamin D: between 10 and 30 µg/mg. Egg yolk, butter, offal such as liver and kidney as well as porcini and shitake mushrooms also contain some vitamin D.

Vitamin D3 ensures:
● normal absorption and utilization of calcium and phosphorus
● a normal calcium level in the blood
● the maintenance of normal bones and teeth
● the maintenance of normal muscle function
● normal function of the immune system
