Description
Generating electricity on the balcony, terrace, shed, or garden – it's that easy
Take the energy transition into your own hands: With a balcony power plant you can generate your own electricity on your terrace or balcony. It's simple, lowers costs, protects the environment – and it's pretty cool.
Electricity prices are rising to dizzying heights, and there's no end in sight for now. You can either complain or become a power producer yourself. With your own small power plant, tenants can turn their balcony or terrace into a power factory for a small price. No contracts and no extra electricity meter – a balcony power plant can simply be plugged into the outlet. We explain how it works, what options you have, and what to watch out for.
A solar power plant is exactly what the name says: a small, private power plant that takes up little space and fits on the balcony, flat roof, or terrace. Photovoltaic modules are used, which can often be easily mounted on a railing or on the facade. This way no usable space is lost. The solar installation can also be placed easily in the garden.
The output of these small energy generators is typically between 300 and 800 watts.
The PV modules (usually one to four units) are connected to the home electrical circuit via a microinverter directly through a Schuko socket (or Wieland) in the household grid. Quite simply in a "Plug-and-Play" principle. The microinverter is important because the solar array produces direct current, which must first be converted to 230V alternating current with the appropriate frequency of 50Hz for the home grid.
Particularly tenants, for whom a widespread installation of solar panels on the whole roof of the house is not an option, are interested in balcony power plants. Because they can easily offset a portion of their electricity costs with it. After the legal framework for such installations was somewhat unclear in the past, private electricity generation in this way is now completely legal under certain conditions.
The rising energy prices currently make it especially tempting to at least partly free yourself from dependence on your electricity provider through private electricity generation.
A single solar module with a microinverter is available from €381.
Balcony power plants with one module mounted on an aluminum frame start at €480.
Balcony power plants with two or more modules mounted on an aluminum frame start at €950.
It can take three to four years to recoup these costs — depending on sun exposure and electricity costs. The system will, however, continue to reliably generate electricity for many more years. For photovoltaic modules, the manufacturer provides a 20-year performance warranty.
The bottom line: the installation is worth it!
A balcony power plant is connected to your power grid via the standard Schuko plug (or Wieland connector).
Some grid operators may not like the connection via the Schuko plug, but technically there is nothing against it.
Just plug it into the outlet with a regular extension cord and you'll save electricity immediately.
2 × 450 Wp (Watt-peak) modules + 2x microinverters + 2x mounting frames + 230 VAC Schuko plug. Several modules can be connected together very easily.
20-year performance warranty on the PV panels.
