Pinky Maden (Lucilia caesar)

Pinky Maden are the fly larvae of goldflies. Goldflies belong to the genus Lucilia and thus to the family of blowflies (Calliphoridae). The distribution area extends over the whole of Europe. The flies themselves grow to about 8-10 mm in size and have a shiny green-gold body, which is where the name gold flies comes from. Goldlflies feed on various juices. For this purpose, they fly to flowers to suck nectar or carrion from which they ingest escaping fluids. Goldflies also prefer to lay their eggs on carrion. After a short time the eggs hatch into maggots, which have a pinkish coloration. Therefore the name Pinky Maden has developed. The Pinky Maden feed on decomposing carrion and grow rapidly to their full size. For a long time Pinky Maden have been one of the typical fishing maggots and are therefore bred annually by the ton. The breeding takes place in special fly houses where they are bred on pork, fish or poultry. Our Pinky Maden come from an Italian breeding farm where they are bred exclusively on chicken and turkey meat. Since the poultry is fed corn, the Maden take on this coloring, giving them a slight yellow tint. This makes the Maden particularly intense in their coloring and distinguishes them from other pinky Maden bred on pork or fish. These Maden do not have such a strong pink coloration. The consistency of the Pinky Maden is quite firm, making them able to withstand even the odd bad bite, depending on the type of fish. The Pinky Maden are also comparatively quite heavy due to the special feeding, which makes them sink quickly to the bottom and not float up on the water. This makes them especially interesting for anglers who fish in flowing waters. However, not only small fish can be caught with the small Pinky Maden. Almost no fish can resist a hook with several juicy pinkies, so even larger specimens can be caught with this bait. That's why pinkies have been listed as one of the standard fishing maggots for years and can be found in any well-stocked fishing store. We receive weekly fresh Pinky Maden directly from the breeding farm in Italy. This means that we always have excellent Maden ready for sale that can be stored for a long time and are very catchy. You just have to make sure that the Maden are stored accordingly. A storage at 0-2 °C is recommended. If it gets too warm, the Maden become active and generate a certain amount of heat through friction. They then escape quite quickly from open containers and spread everywhere. In addition, the Pinky Maden then quickly tend to caster. Good for anyone who wants to fish with casters, but even more annoying for anyone who needs fresh pinkies. Due to the increased temperature, the metabolism of the Maden is also boosted, so that more ammonia is emitted. This is not only an odor nuisance, but also harmful to the Maden. As soon as the Maden crawl around in the ammonia-soaked substrate, they quickly die, as they cannot tolerate the high concentration of ammonia. Therefore, store the pinky Maden very cool in dry sawdust. This absorbs the secreted ammonia and creates optimal conditions for the Maden. Apart from being used as Angelmade, the Pinkies are not disdained by some bird species. They are not suitable as food for other animals, such as reptiles or amphibians. On the one hand because they are bred on carrion and on the other hand because they have an acrid ammonia odor which is repulsive to many animals. However, the Pinky Maden can be left to rot and the freshly hatched flies can be fed. These are capable of flight and are suitable as food for birds, reptiles and amphibians. Especially animals that need flying prey, such as some species of mantids, are well served with the golden flies.
