An enchanting interplay of tiny coincidences: A foreign body penetrates the shell's interior, is encapsulated and layer by layer a pearl is created that is unique in shape and color. It can only grow in 20 out of 8,000 double-shelled mussel species. And only a few pearls grow large and regular enough to later become a piece of jewelry. It takes between two and eight years for this to happen: Layer by layer, the oyster coats a piece of tissue or an implanted nucleus with white or colored mother-of-pearl. The more fine layers are formed, the greater the luster of the pearl. This luster is one of the quality characteristics by which a pearl is judged. The color and size are also slightly dependent on the water temperature - and very significantly on the mother oyster: the large black-lipped oyster, for example, forms the dark Tahitian pearls, which are up to 19 mm in size. Akoya pearls, on the other hand, grow in much smaller shells - and are therefore a maximum of 8 mm in size.
