The Black Madonna of Luxembourg, bronze art

The Black Madonna and Child in the Church of St. John of Grund is considered one of the most beautiful Gothic black virgins in Europe. The 14th-century original measures 1.20 m and was made of wood in the Cologne region. Its style is clearly influenced by the works of sculptors Heinrich Parler and his son Peter (1330-1399), who revolutionized Gothic art.
Originally housed in a Franciscan monastery on today's Place Guillaume in Luxembourg, it was hidden away for several years to prevent its destruction by French revolutionaries. It was not until 1805 that she finally found her place in a chapel in the Eglise Saint Jean du Grund.
Today, the Black Madonna of Luxembourg is the object of special veneration in and around the Grand Duchy.
