The Vierge Consolatrice des Affligés (or Virgin and Child) dates back to 1624 and was initially preserved on the glacis outside the town's fortification walls by Father Brocquart of the Jesuit College.
Her invocation soon became increasingly popular, and an annual pilgrimage was organized, which continues to this day during the Octave period.
The Virgin Consoler of the Afflicted became the patron saint of Luxembourg City in 1666, and patroness of the country from 1678. She can be admired in the former Jesuit church from 1794, which became Notre-Dame Cathedral in 1870.
Her image, and her message of comfort and hope, is seen by a large part of the Luxembourg population as one of the components of national sentiment and collective consciousness.
