In 1966, on the occasion of its 50th anniversary, BMW introduced the compact mid-size sedan of the 02 series. The "2" in the model designation stood for two-door and was intended to make it easier for customers to distinguish it from the somewhat larger four-door sedans of the so-called "New Class". The "02er" rounded off the BMW range at the time at the bottom end and was the best-selling BMW of the 1970s until production ceased in 1977. Designed for BMW by the well-known coachbuilder Baur in Stuttgart, a full 4-seater convertible and a Targa equipped with a roll bar were also produced at Baur from 1968 onwards for the brand's fresh air fans.
