In July 1977, Moyse's factory rolled out the shunting locomotive (called Locotracteur in France) Y 8001 as the first representative of a 525-unit series for shunting tasks at SNCF stations, marshalling yards, construction sites and workshops. Stronger and longer than its predecessors, these could also replace certain locomotives for the delivery of light freight trains along the line.

The Y 8000s, at introduction, received a livery inspired by the BB 63500 in dominant orange, complemented by brown and white. In this paint scheme most of them carried their careers through with all successive SNCF logos up to the current 'Carmillon'. Some were repainted for the corresponding activities to which they were assigned: Fret, Infra or even TER.
