Between 1963 and 1968, 80 locomotives of the A1A-A1A 68000 series were built for heavy service on the French State Railways (SNCF). They had a lot in common with the lighter BB 67000 delivered at the same time, but due to the use of a more powerful, heavier Sulzer LVA 24 diesel engine and its larger generator, the bogies were designed with three axles in order to be able to run with less axle load on some lines of the ex-Etat and PO-Midi lines. Their rather unusual axle configuration consists of two bogies, of which only the outer axles are driven. A boiler and water tanks for the steam heating of the passenger trains were also installed, whereby the additional load was made possible by the two non-powered axles.
The six-axle, diesel-electric locomotive had an operating weight of 106 tons. With its 12-cylinder diesel engine with an output of 1,985 kW and an output at the wheel flange of 1,660 kW, it reached a top speed of 130 km/h.
In their original version, the locomotives had a unique design with arrows and attached decorative strips, which was created by the famous railroad designer Paul Arzens and made them unmistakable. They were used for heavy passenger and freight traffic. Their use in western, northern, eastern and central France also took the locomotives to the stations of Bantzenheim on the German border and Delle on the Swiss border as well as to Basel in Switzerland.
