In the 1950s, the German Federal Railroad developed a diesel locomotive type program to renew its rolling stock. The main goal was to replace steam traction on the still quite extensive branch line network. The single-engine V 100 series with 1100 HP engines was developed for mixed branch line service. Parallel to these V 100.10s, a total of 380 machines with 1350 hp engines were delivered as V 100.20s from 1962 to 1965.
With the introduction of the computer number, the series designation of the more powerful machines was changed to 212. After the classic red livery, numerous machines were given an ocean blue/beige paint scheme from 1974/75.
After the closure of numerous branch lines, the classic area of use for the V 100 also shrank. As before, the operational program included mainly commuter and transfer trains. Some locomotives were used in construction train service. Numerous locomotives found new owners, including non-ferrous railroads and track construction companies in Germany and abroad.
