There was a spirit of optimism during the Roaring Twenties. After the inflation, the economy boomed, and things were looking up. This was accompanied by a steadily growing hunger for energy, which was almost exclusively met with domestic coal at the time. The railway was responsible for fast and cost-effective transport. However, it soon reached its limits. The traditional open freight cars, which had to be loaded and unloaded laboriously and expensively, could no longer transport the required quantities cost-effectively. Therefore, in the early 1920s, the Deutsche Reichsbahn developed the OOt Oldenburg type self-discharging wagons, which could be loaded in a train formation and, above all, unloaded automatically at power plants. With their pioneering technology and a capacity of 75 m3, these vehicles proved so effective that this basic design is still considered standard in bulk freight transport today. The new Märklin models evoke the time when especially coal trains symbolized the dawn of a new railway era. They can be pulled on the layout by ultramodern electric locomotives of that time, as well as heavy freight steam locomotives, some of which were still from the era of the state railways. Prototype: 10 four-axle large-capacity self-discharging wagons of the OOt Oldenburg type from the Deutsche Reichsbahn-Gesellschaft (DRG).
