H0 Märklin 38111 Electric locomotive Series 1100 of the Dutch Railways (NS) Museum locomotive in the Utrecht Railway Museum 1:87 MfX DCC digital sound
Electric locomotive Series 1100
We write the year 1950. There was widespread excitement in war-torn Western European countries. And the railway played a decisive role. They stood, at the time, for freedom and mobility – and they were also a symbol of the dawn of a new era. This applied, of course, also to the Netherlands, where many lines had already been electrified before World War II. Therefore, after 1945 a focus of the Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS) was the rapid expansion of electric operation and the modernization of the locomotive fleet. To quickly obtain modern locomotives, they turned to the French BB 8100, which had reliably been in service in the neighboring country since 1947. This locomotive type featured two powered, two-axle bogies and thus a very modern propulsion technology. Finally, the NS ordered 60 machines from Alstom in Belfort and integrated them into their locomotive fleet as Series 1100. With a power output of 2760 HP and a top speed of 120 km/h, they soon dominated traction on the electric NS lines. They also hauled famous trains such as the TEE “Rheingold” and “Rembrandt” or the “Italo-Holland Express.” For over four decades, the sturdy 1100s were among the indispensable locomotives in the Netherlands; the last example went out of service in 1999. Locomotive 1125 was meticulously restored to the original state of the 1950s. It is on display as a special highlight in the Utrecht locomotive museum. Unfortunately, like the other five preserved examples, this machine is not operational. A 1100 in front of trains like the Rheingold could, however, be reproduced in small scale in the future with Märklin’s new, highly detailed model.
