In May 1962, the German Federal Railroad put six E 10 locomotives into service with special bogies made by the Henschel company that were designed for 160 km/h to cover the fast Rheingold and Rheinpfeil trains. After extensive test runs, the locomotives entered regular service starting in the fall of 1962.
