Dry and irritated eyes, or red and painful eyelids, eyelids stuck together upon waking – all of these symptoms may indicate Meibomian gland dysfunction.

Meibomian glands are located in the upper and lower eyelids, with their openings at the eyelid margins. These glands produce, directly from the edge of the eyelids, an oily substance (meibum) that forms an important component of the lipid layer of the tear film. With each blink, the lipid layer is renewed, preventing premature evaporation of the tear film and thus helping to stabilize the tear film. Meibomian gland dysfunction or obstruction of their ducts leads to an alteration of the lipid layer. This results in dry eye, due to premature evaporation of the tear film or excessive tearing.
