The plasma jet is generated by the electric arc between an electrode inside the cutting torch and the workpiece. The ionized gas mixture leaving the nozzle forms the plasma. The calorific value of the jet (around 18,000°C) causes an almost instantaneous melting that propagates through the entire thickness of the workpiece. Plasma cutting is mainly used by companies in the metallurgy sector. It enables metal sheets to be cut to thicknesses ranging from 0 to 70 mm, with a precision of plus or minus 0.2 mm. On a plasma cutting machine, the extremely high temperature instantly melts the metal, while the pressurized gas gradually flushes out the molten metal droplets. Plasma cutting torches must only be used in specially ventilated rooms or in the open air, as toxic gases are released by the very high working temperatures. Some plasma cutting systems include a calibrated jet of water, which is sprayed from the plasma torch to cool the metal immediately after plasma cutting, thus preventing the release of toxic gases.
