Since the 12th century, the former church of Saint-Nicolas has played an important role in the city of Luxembourg.
In 1778, the former Jesuit church (whose order was abolished in 1773) became a parish church, under the name of Saint-Nicolas-et-Sainte-Thérèse. That's why her statue still stands above the main door. It wasn't until the 19th century that the church was elevated to the status of a cathedral dedicated to Notre-Dame.
One of the most popular legends about Saint Nicholas is that 3 little boys, lost in the night, asked a butcher for lodging. As soon as they entered, the butcher rushed over to cut them up and put them in the salt cellar. One day, the good Saint Nicholas came to the butcher's and insisted on eating the little salted fish in his salt cellar. Frightened, the butcher fled, and St. Nicholas resurrected the three children. This is how the Saint came to be venerated as the patron saint not only of children, but also of schoolchildren, students, pilgrims and travelers.
