Erected in the heart of Luxembourg, Place de la Constitution, in 1922, this female sculpture was known at the time as the "Queen of Peace". The monument consists of a raised square base supporting a 21-metre-high obelisk, topped by a gilded statue of a woman holding a laurel wreath at arm's length.
Commissioned from the famous Luxembourg sculptor Claus CITO as a tribute to Luxembourg soldiers who died in the First World War, the "golden woman" was dismantled by the German occupiers in 1940, and only regained its pedestal in 1985, following a series of incredible events. The "Gëlle Fra" is more than a memorial to the soldiers who fell for their country during the conflicts of the 20th century. Today, it is a symbol of the democratic values of freedom and peace. In fact, it was chosen as the figurehead of the Luxembourg pavilion at the 2010 Shanghai World Expo.
