Stag' bas-relief by Antoine-Louis BARYE

Antoine-Louis BARYE (1796-1875) was the undisputed master of nineteenth-century animal sculpture, and the emblematic artist of Romantic sculpture, whose masters included Antoine GROS and then Eugène DELACROIX. Throughout his career, he produced masterpieces of anatomical precision, expressing a perfect mastery of movement and character. Today, his work is exhibited at the Louvre, the Musée d'Orsay and many other major museums around the world. It has influenced generations of sculptors the world over, including FRÉMIET, VALTON, MÈNE and TRÉMONT. This art bronze bas-relief, conceived as a decorative element for a clock or marble base, was created in the 1820s and produced by various foundries during the 19th and 20th centuries. The antique cast is on display at the Musée Bonnat in Bayonne, France.
