Description

Ermesinde (1186-1247) was the only daughter of Henry IV the Blind, Count of Luxembourg and Namur, and Agnes of Guelders.
She ruled Luxembourg for 21 years, from 1197 to 1247, and her wise and prudent government made it a prosperous country. On November 6, 1236, Countess Ermesinde granted the town of Echternach its charter of emancipation, becoming the first locality in present-day Luxembourg to be granted this privilege.
His bones, rediscovered in 1875, lie in a new sarcophagus in the crypt of the Notre-Dame de Clairefontaine chapel.
