En 1978, Jean-Pierre Dionnet repère Yves Chaland et son acolyte Luc Cornillon dans le fanzine Echelle de valeur, où ils publiaient de petites histoires. Dans Métal Hurlant, Chaland devient l'un des initiateurs d'un mouvement clé des années 1980, la ligne claire. Il y crée les personnages de Bob Fish, Le Jeune Albert, Freddy Lombard... Ce premier volume rassemble toutes les histoires crées par Yves Chaland, à l'exception des Freddy Lombard qui feront l'objet d'un second volume
