What is electrosmog?
An overview

Electrosmog is a phenomenon that has grown enormously in importance over the last 25 years. Of course, there was already exposure to electromagnetic fields before that, but mainly of a different nature. We can roughly divide electrosmog into 2 major classes, which differ from each other both physically and in terms of their biological effects:

1) Low-frequency alternating electromagnetic fields

Since the electrification of the industrialized nations at the end of the 19th century, we have been "burdened" primarily by so-called low-frequency alternating fields (today in Europe at 50 Hz, in the USA 60 Hz). These fields are all still present today as a burden on our bodies, and more so every year, as our electricity consumption increases in line with economic growth.

Here we are talking about the electric and magnetic fields that arise during energy transmission (high-voltage lines, normal overhead lines, power supply lines in your household), transformation (think of the nearest transformer station, but also the charger of your cell phone) and energy consumption in industry, transport, office or private life. For example, when you cook, switch on the light or sit in front of the television.

What many people have not yet realized is that the much-vaunted (and state-subsidized) electric car revolution will naturally lead to a sharp increase in exposure to low-frequency fields in the area of power supply and transformation. This is not yet noticeable, as the proportion of electric vehicles is negligible. However, as soon as vehicles become cheaper and thus more widely accepted, they will need to be charged every day. A quick calculation shows that our existing electricity grids are nowhere near able to cope with this load and will have to be significantly upgraded to cope with the much higher current levels.

n Germany in particular, a significant initial grid upgrade must take place now due to the renewable energy revolution. However, this has nothing to do with the demand for electric cars, but is due to the fact that the places where renewable energy is generated in the country are predominantly far away from the places where the energy is consumed. For example, wind power comes from northern Germany, but is needed in the industrialized south, for example in the automotive industry. This is why new high-voltage power lines are needed, which are understandably very controversial among the population.

2) High-frequency electromagnetic fields: Microwave radiation

In the 1990s, there were two technological revolutions that not only changed our lives dramatically, but also caused a completely new, previously unknown level of exposure to high-frequency electromagnetic radiation. These were, on the one hand, mobile phone technology and, on the other, the Internet, which was soon preferably used wirelessly via WLAN.

In 2007, with the introduction of the first so-called smartphone (Apple's iPhone), the two technologies converged and the Internet was increasingly used via mobile communications. You are probably aware of the further development since then. Smartphone use has exploded, along with the introduction of other mobile devices such as tablets, to such an extent that the majority of users now go online with them.

From a technical point of view, this means that practically everyone today carries one or more microwave transmitters and receivers, usually very close to the body. We haven't even mentioned the numerous transmitters that have to be operated by mobile phone companies to network the devices. In addition, the exposure increases in a small space with many people. A classroom, a train compartment, a shopping arcade, an open-plan office or normal residential buildings in urban areas: They have all become places that are exposed to microwave radiation from many individual transmitters and receivers.

Please don't misunderstand us: we are moderate users of all these technologies ourselves and appreciate the benefits they bring to all our lives. Doing without them completely is unrealistic and would restrict our lives. Any thoughts in this direction are also pointless because the underlying industry has become far too important for the economy.

However, it is very possible to use this technology carefully.

We have deliberately included two pregnant women and a baby in the potpourri of images. Believe it or not, we regularly receive calls from worried mothers whose pregnant daughters place their tablet, laptop or smartphone on their bare stomachs. Their daughters lack the awareness of the problem that responsible use of technology requires. By no means do we want to be moralizers, we would much rather provide objective information and hopefully give an impetus in the right direction. Because if the child is harmed by this careless use of technology, it is not only bitter for the child itself, but also for the mother, not least because of the inevitable feelings of guilt.

And you will also recognize representatives of the older generation in the pictures. Why? Because it is striking what a large percentage of our customers belong to this group. That's not surprising. If you read the chapter on stress in our information brochure, you will learn that biologists define ageing precisely in terms of reduced resistance to stress and illness. The permanent stress caused by electrosmog generally becomes more noticeable the older you are. Young people are of course just as susceptible to stress, but their resistance is even higher. This does not mean that we do not have any young customers. However, statistically there are significantly fewer of them than older people, which of course also has to do with their lower awareness of the problem (keyword: "carefree youth").

The current large-scale installation of transmitters for the new 5G mobile communications generation in industrialized countries has sparked a sometimes heated debate, just like other generational changes before it. This time, the discourse has produced particularly hardened viewpoints. They range from conspiracy theories on the one hand to ridiculous, scientifically untenable trivialization on the other.

Unfortunately, there is hardly any evidence of a cultivated culture of discussion based on scientific facts. The debate is thus reminiscent of many other social discourses of our time, which seem to be becoming increasingly polarized.

The Hamoni® research team would like to make a small contribution to a hopefully more pragmatic and differentiated discussion. To this end, we have compared the installed transmission power of newly installed base stations that emit 5G as well as 2G, 3G and 4G with the transmission power of base stations that only emit the combination 2G/3G/4G. This type of comparison is, in our opinion, the most meaningful way to determine how much the transmission power of base stations will increase with the introduction of 5G. The result of our analysis is as follows:
